Marco Polo, born in 1254 in Venice, was an Italian merchant traveller who’s travels are recorded in the II Milione (The Travels of Marco Polo), a book that introduced Europeans to Central Asia and China. The shape and colour draws inspiration from typical coromandel folding screen. The gold intarsia is representing the trip of Marco Polo: 28 steps to Quanzhou, 10 steps back to Venice. A compass rose in worked into the cap top which could be revealed by unscrewing, showing on of his most important tools. The barrel is inspired by the travel route of Marco Polo. The Lapis lazuli ball in the cone is symbolizing the globe.
