As a tribute to floral and geometric patterns of the Taj Mahal and to India’s ancient craftsmanship, Montblanc created the Montblanc High Artistry A Celebration of the Taj Mahal Limited Edition 76, made from Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold and dark red lacquer. The red colour represents the love and passion between Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It also mirrors the colour of the stone inlays on the Taj Mahal. The central cupola of the Taj Mahal was the inspiration for the domed shape of the cap top, which is crowned by the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl. This is embedded in black onyx as an homage to Indian mother-of-pearl intarsia work. In honour of the legendary Peacock Throne, the edition is decorated with a stylised peacock feather containing at its heart a decorative rosette made from mother-of-pearl inlaid on solid gold and decorated with a diamond. In reference to traditional aranmula kannadi – mirrors that bestow prosperity, happiness and wealth – the feather shines with due to polished gold. The nib, made from Au 750 solid gold, is adorned with an engraving of a geometric pattern inspired by similar decorations on the Taj Mahal. The edition is limited to 76 pieces, as – according to the Islamic calendar – Shah Jahan died in the year 1076.
