François I was the first renaissance king and also a passionate patron of the fine arts. He acquired works by Italian masters including Michelangelo, Titian and Raphael and laid the foundations for the royal art collection in the Louvre palace in Paris. During his reign, François I added to the royal library, made French the official language and founded the Collège Royal in 1530, which still exists today under the name of Collège de France and is famous throughout the world as a higher education and research establishment. His renaissance châteaux in Chambord and Fontainebleau are a memorial to this legendary king and powerful patron of art and culture. Renaissance patterns adorn the clip and the gold-coated rings. The nib is decorated with an engraving of the fleur-de-lis, the emblem of the French royal house.
