The Montblanc High Artistry A Tribute to the Great Wall Limited Edition 5 expresses the many facets and legends surrounding one of the greatest man-made structures on the Earth. The edition brings to life the beauty and craftsmanship of the Ming dynasty, a period that changed the face of China, as well as the Great Wall itself. Chinese art and culture flowered during that time, giving rise to many traditional artworks associated today with high Chinese culture, such as enamel work, jewellery, calligraphy and porcelain vases. The cap and barrel, made from Au 750 solid yellow gold, are artfully hand painted with enamel cloisonné and champlevé designs in magnificent colours, inspired by the traditional enamel painted vases from the Ming dynasty, beautifully contrasting with the Au 750 solid yellow gold fittings with a shiny finish. The artfully skeletonised cap top, made of Au 750 solid yellow gold, is inspired by the hat jewellery worn by emperors from the Ming dynasty. It is skilfully hand engraved with lotus flowers and opens to reveal a precious brilliant-cut diamond centre stone of approx. 1.8 ct. The Montblanc emblem in red lacquer is found underneath the diamond. Inspired by the handles of the vases from the Ming dynasty, the Au 750 solid yellow gold clip depicts a 3D hand engraved lion – a traditional Chinese symbol of protection. In tribute to the significance of calligraphy in Chinese culture, not only is the overall shape of the writing instrument inspired by a calligraphy brush, the cone is remodelled to a calligraphy brush made of squirrel hair stabilised with translucent lacquer. For writing calligraphy, the cone can be exchanged with a real brush. The handcrafted Au 750 solid yellow gold curved nib with a tip that has a 45° angle makes it possible to create lines of different thicknesses at various angles. It is decorated with a 3D relief of the Great Wall and set with a brilliant cut diamond. The Great Wall, as it stood during the Ming dynasty, is hand engraved into the Au 750 solid yellow gold forepart of the Limited Edition 5. One of the many legends surrounding the Great Wall is immortalised as an engraving on the revolving barrel ring made of Kalahari jasper. It is the tale of one brick, which has rested for thousands of years on the tower of the Jiayuguan Pass.
