The Montblanc High Artistry A Tribute to the Great Wall Limited Edition 1 Grisaille Enamel celebrates the ancient culture and symbolism surrounding the Great Wall. Bringing to life the beauty of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), this splendid edition is inspired by the iconic porcelain vases of that era. The traditional blue and white peony pattern beloved by the Ming artists decorate the Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold writing instrument. Symbolising luxury and happiness, these flowers are crafted using the grisaille enamel technique of layering white enamel over a dark background to create subtle shading effects. This skilled artwork is further refined with pavé set diamonds adorning the cap and barrel. Crowning this edition is a selected 5.42 ct. brilliant / step cut blue sapphire set into the skeletonised and hand engraved Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold cap top capturing the airy shapes of Chinese clouds. Underneath the centre stone appears the Montblanc emblem, hand engraved in the gold. The Chinese guardian lion is a traditional symbol of protection as powerful as the Great Wall itself and is also frequently found worked into the handles of Ming vases. This lion is depicted in the 3D hand engraving on the Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold clip with vintage optic. A hand engraving of the Great Wall as it stood during the Ming dynasty is found on the Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold forepart. The handcrafted curved Au 750 solid gold champagne-tone coated nib is adorned with a 3D relief of the Great Wall and set with a blue sapphire. One of the many legends surrounding the Great Wall is immortalised as an engraving of two swallows on the Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold barrel ring. According to legend, knocking on the Great Wall with a stone will produce the twittering sound of a swallow, which is considered a lucky omen for soldiers setting off to battle. The twittering comes from the soul of a female swallow who lost her mate on the other side of the closed Rouyuan Gate and twittered in mourning by the Great Wall until she died of sadness. Artfully placed within the cone is a miniature music box that plays the singing of a nightingale – symbolising luck and happiness. Pavé set diamonds decorate the cone’s end.
